Making a Difference
MDE is committed to being involved in the community we serve and doing our part to make it thrive. Here are some of the ways MDE “made a difference in Markham” in 2014:
Encouraging the Next Generation:
The Markham District Energy Sustainability Bursary launched in 2010 to help cultivate and nurture environmental leadership among Markham’s youth. The annual bursary encourages and rewards graduating Markham
high school students who have distinguished themselves through academic excellence and participation in environmental extracurricular, volunteer and community service activities, and who intend to study in a field related to the environment at the post-secondary level. In May 2014, MDE presented bursaries to students from each of Markham’s 14 high schools at a special meeting of Markham Council for community recognition.
Supporting Local Charities:
Every year charitable support is provided to local organizations. With a focus on enhancing the
quality of life among Markham citizens, support concentrates primarily on the healthcare sector including Markham Stouffville Hospital and local organizations assisting Markham’s seniors and those with special needs. Organizations supported in 2014 included Markham Stouffville Hospital, Unionville Home Society, Markhaven Home for Seniors, and Special Olympics Ontario.
