For district energy, growth is a key metric of success. MDE has to invest in our infrastructure in advance
of building construction in the development area.
To achieve growth MDE’s energy service needs
to be reliable and competitively priced. Without these features, district energy will not attract new customers. The City of Markham encourages but does not mandate connection to district energy.
In 2014, three new major customers were added in Markham Centre maintaining the goal of connecting every new building built in Markham Centre and Cornell Centre.
A Growing Customer Base
By the end of 2014, the connected customer base totalled 8.5 million square feet; which has more than doubled since 2010. By 2016, connected customers will exceed 10 million square feet.
And Much More to Come
Long term, Markham Centre is forecast to grow to a mixed use development exceeding 30 million square feet and Cornell Centre will grow to 10 million square feet.
